STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — When community members donate new or gently used baby items, they’re doing more than clearing out a closet — they’re wrapping a family in love and security.

So when the Muslim Sisters of Staten Island hosted its signature “Community Baby Closet” event at Health for Youths — designed to ensure that every local baby has a healthy, dignified start in life, regardless of their family’s financial circumstances — great things unfolded.

“With essential baby supplies in higher demand than ever, our community is coming together to make a difference,” said Safiyyah Abdul-Qawiyy, the CEO of Muslim Sisters. “The Community Baby Closet” acts as a critical lifeline for families in need, providing everything from diapers and formula to strollers and clothes.”

The organization extended an invitation to everyone on Staten Island, asking them to participate in its baby showers to help replenish its shelves and provide direct relief to parents and infants in the area.

“It takes a village to raise a child, and we are strengthening ours,” Abdul-Qawiyy added, noting that the baby closet celebration in Tompkinsville is an annual signature event which was originally called a “Community Baby Shower.”

“It was our first time collaborating in Health for Youths,” she continued. “And the purpose of the event is to support needy families with new and gently used clothing and essentials for babies and children from birth to 10 years-old.”
